Colonials lock up second seed with 4-1 win over Elmira

DANBURY, CT– Special teams proved to be the difference as the Danbury Colonials completed a weekend sweep of the Elmira Jr. Soaring Eagles Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 4-1 victory in their regular season finale.

Kyle McEnany opened the scoring with a powerplay goal in the first period, assisted by Brandon Cope and Dylan Webber. The opening frame was a dominant one for the black-and-orange, as they outshot the Jr. Soaring Eagles 15-4.

The special teams unit would go back to work in the second period, as Webber potted a powerplay goal of his own.

Maverik Skeans would net his fifth goal of the season early in the third period to give the Colonials a 3-0 lead. Though Elmira would answer back with a tally minutes later, Kevin Remson would put the icing on the cake in the waning minutes of regulation time with the team’s third powerplay goal of the contest.

Remson will ride a seven-game point streak into the postseason. He has posted a multi-point performance in four of those seven outings. Brandon Cope, with a pair of assists, registered his third consecutive multi-point game.

Shane O’Brien stopped 26 of 27 shots in the win, earning his 14th win of the season.

With the win, the Colonials leapfrogged past the Jr. Soaring Eagles to earn home-ice advantage in their first round playoff matchup. They will host Elmira in the opening set of the 2020 Fraser Cup Playoffs. The winner of that series will face either the Skylands Kings or the Long Beach sharks in the Northeast Division Final.
